Goals

Goal 1:

  • I will become a certified CPR instructor with the American Heart Association to teach parents CPR and basic first aid.

  • I was able to achieve this goal because I became a certified CPR instructor with the American Heart Association in April 2017.

Goal 2:

  • I will teach classes on CPR and first aid to parents.

  • I was able to partially complete this goal because I held two classes for parents, but on one of the nights all of the parents cancelled because of sick children. But, because I wanted to reach more parents with CPR and first aid training, I decided to create my third goal.

Goal 3:

  • I will create a YouTube video to teach parents CPR and basic first aid.

  • I was able to achieve this goal because I created a 3 minute YouTube video that teaches the basics of CPR and what to do if infants are choking.

Outcomes

Outcome 1:

By becoming a CPR instructor, I strengthened my own CPR and first aid skills as a healthcare provider. The benefit of this outcome is that as I move forward in my career as a registered nurse I will have strong skills in CPR.

Outcome 2:

By teaching free CPR and first aid classes to parents and offering free babysitting, I was able to reach out to a special demographic of people that are most in need of emergency first aid training and yet through life’s circumstances are not usually able to receive it. The benefit of this outcome is that local mothers and fathers who attended class or watched the video are more confident in recognizing when something is wrong and knowing what to do.

Outcome 3:

By creating a YouTube video about CPR and first aid skills for parents, I was able to make this knowledge freely available to the public. The benefit of this outcome is that this video can be shared over and over again in the future by parents to other parents or students of every kind. An unforeseen benefit of this is that the SUU nursing department is able to use this video and share it in every capacity they feel appropriate.
